On Saturday, October the 24th the Holiday Inn Kenilworth façade will be Floodlit in purple with a Rotary message “End Polio Now “. In these troubled times world-wide it is perhaps a sobering and hopeful thought that mankind can beat the disease.

Polio, the life-changing and crippling scourge that came to the fore in the late 1940s is nearly beaten. The 47 countries of Africa have recently been declared Polio free. Today, only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, have reported cases of polio caused by the wild virus; but no child anywhere is safe until we’ve vaccinated every child. Unless we eradicate polio, within 10 years, as many as 200,000 new cases could occur around the world each year.

Why purple? A purple dye is put on each child’s finger after inoculation.

Rotary has since 1988 been part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, raising and contributing $890million towards the immunization programme which has proved 99.9% effective

Every $ raised by Rotary can be gift aided & is matched by an additional $2 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Rotary is committed to raising $50 million a year over the next 3 years to finally beat the last 2 areas remaining from 1988 when 125 countries were stricken. The efforts gone into achieving this result may well need to be redoubled to overcome Covid -19 but this result with Polio so far gives confidence we can beat Covid.

The recent reappearance of the Polio virus in London as well as New York teminds us of the need to absulutly eradicate this disease world wide.
