Inspired by Bluebird and The history of speed
on wheels and water, Nigel McNight gave us a brilliant evenings entertainment
about his life and his aims to nurture the future of the 'Quicksilve'r project
to be the fastest boat on water.
From his youth, when he joined the Air Training Corps and
writing short stories about flight and engineering in magazines, including
'Eagle', Nigel progressed to become a writer of note and achieved his Press
credentials.
Along the way, he jogged alongside the likes of
Mike Hailwood, Barry Sheen, Chris Bonnington, John Pertwee (Dr Who) and even
Tommy Cooper.
His long write up about the Space Shuttle, owing to
his knowledgeable, low tech style of writing, eventually resulted in a bestselling
book,
Still inspired by his passion for speed and
bringing back memories about the greats such as Sir Malcolm Campbell, John
Cobb, and others, his greatest hero was Sir Donald Campbell, The only person to
set both world land and water speed records in 1964. He lost his life in a high
speed crash on Coniston Water in January 1967. His body wasn't finally
recovered until May 2001
Teaming up with the late, great, designer, Ken
Norris and aided by a group of ardent supporters, Nigel started to build the 'Quicksilver'
speed boat - a state of the art vessel aimed at beating the current water speed
recored of 317 mph.
The project is well under way and trials have begun
with the aim of making the attempt later in 2020.
This will require a lot of hard work and dedication
as well as a high degree of risk. There is a Members Club for anyone who wants
to check on the progress.
