Edward Timpson MP Presents Prizes to Winners
On Saturday May 14th Edward Timpson MP, Minister for Children and Families, presented prizes at the Nantwich Museum to runners up and winners of the Rotary Club of Nantwich Primary Schools Art and Handwriting Competition, which attracted a record 860 entries from 9 local primary schools!
Teachers, friends and family members of the winners waited with eager anticipation to hear what they had won as they knew only that they were prize winners. Ian Sutton, Manager of Nantwich Sainsbury’s presented trophies and a voucher for £25 to the Overall Winner of the 2016 Art Competition which was won by Jeremy Shorthose, age 11 of Acton C of E Primary School, and the Overall Winner of the 2016 Handwriting Competition Jessica Martin age 8 of Stapeley Broad Lane CE Primary School.
Highfields Community Primary School meanwhile, was awarded a cheque for £250 for Overall Outstanding Contribution, which was presented by Amanda James from The Charity of William Hodgkin, which donated £400 for competition prizes. Rotary Club of Nantwich President, Rod Stokes presented prizes for Special Mentions and Highly Commended - details of all prize winners below.
The difficult job was judging the 860 and the stalwarts taking on this challenge were local artists Martin Greenwood (who is also a local architect) and Claire Somerville (who is also an art teacher at Brine Leas School) judging the Art Competition, while calligrapher Heidi Payton judged the Handwriting entries
The theme for the competition was simply ‘The Queen’ for the Art Competition, and for the Handwriting Competition, the theme for Key Stage 1 was ‘The National Anthem’, while for Key Stage 2 it was extracts from the Olympic Ideals of 1894 and 2016.
Said judge Martin Greenwood: “We were most impressed not just by the number of entries this year, but particularly by the high standard of the entries in both art and handwriting. We have many talented young artists in Nantwich and it’s great to see this competition growing from strength to strength.
Said organiser Richard Morgan-Wynne: “Nantwich Rotary Club is delighted to be able to organise this competition which shows the excellent results of the art and handwriting being taught in the local Primary Schools. I am pleased to congratulate all the winners on their work.”
