Rotary Young Artist Competition

Entries for the Young Artist competition were judged on Monday March 1st. See below for results.
Rotary Club of Buxton encourage young artists.
Following local success in last years Rotary Youth Competitions when Young Chefs, Environmentalists and Photographers made it through to Regional and National finals, the baton has been taken up this year by budding young artists.
The local Buxton heat of the National Rotary Young Artist Competition attracted entries from local schools, Burbage Primary and Harpur Hill Primary.
With the encouragement of their teachers, the children, many of whom have been working from home due to COVID-19 restrictions, created artwork on the theme of ‘Wild Nature’.
Our judges, artists Susan Eversfield and Jo Spencer, both of whom regularly exhibit their work at the Green Man Gallery, assessed against the criteria of technical merit, content, composition, style, and imagination and were extremely impressed by the quality and originality of the works.
The judges awarded the top prize to Ollie White of Burbage Primary school with runners-up prizes going to Ellis Hutchinson from Harpur Hill and Nancy Pilkington from Burbage. William McKenzie and Emily Wentworth from Harpur Hill were also highly commended. The winner and runners up will go forward to the Rotary District heat and maybe even to the National Final. Here’s hoping.

Big Dog Parker's owner, Elizabeth, has loaned him to the Rotary Club of Buxton to help children. Polio is still crippling under-5s so he's fundraising for Rotary's 'End Polio Now' campaign, by visiting Buxton firms, and inviting their staff to help.

100 boxes of Christmas biscuits were shared with local charities. Thanks to Morrisons for their generous discount and community support. For each box we bought, Morrisons donated one to support communities around the area.

Rotary, in collaboration with other local organisations, is helping people to improve their home energy usage. We have received a Rotary District Grant and are supported by the High Peak Borough Council Community Climate and Nature Action Fund.

Now that the vaccination programme has started we are planning activities (Covid-safe) for later this year. We are helping with traffic control at the Buxton Medical vaccination hub.

Primary school children need to be able to work online but many don't have a computer/tablet. With a District Contingency Fund Grant we have donated £1000 to Buxton Infants and Fairfield Infants for computers.

We are in the process of becoming a "Climate Clever" Rotary Club. We have achieved level one "Inspire" and are now working on achieving the next level - "Investigate".
