Buxton Infants School Raise £250 for Aquabox

Because Buxton Infant School had chosen water as an autumn term subject, the School’s Council decided their October Harvest Festival Collection should go to a water-based charity. Rtn Bruce Thomson, who had given a talk on water to the school in 2007 for LifeStraw, was asked back to give a school assembly presentation on 19 October 2015 based on Aquabox’s provision of safe water to families and communities. Started over 20 years ago by the Rotary Club of Wirksworth, Aquabox charity’s pump filters use membrane technology to remove biological and particulate contaminants commonly found in contaminated water sources. The school raised £202.24 which the Rotary Club of Buxton made up to £250 for an Aquabox Community, capable of producing up to 500,000 litres of safe drinking water: enough for 500 people in regions that have no safe drinking water supply for well over a year and half. UNICEF state 1,800 children under five die every day from diseases linked to contaminated water, sanitation and hygiene. In recognition of the school’s effort, Rotary Club of Buxton President, David Hopkins, presented a merit certificate from the Club. Aquabox (www.aquabox.org) have recently sent 1,300 of their disaster response Aquabox Gold family boxes (water filter and humanitarian goods for 5 people) to Syria, the Philippines, Eretria and Malawi. This equates to over 78,000 humanitarian aid items and 23 million litres of safe drinking water. Each Aquabox Gold costs £125.
