Junior Team players Adam and Dan updated Buxton Rotarians on the changes in hockey e.g. astroturf, since their schooldays

In October, young Buxton Hockey Club (BHC) players Adam Cook and Dan Clayton gave an excellent talk with slides to Rotary Club of Buxton about the changes in hockey since the members’ schooldays when matches started with a ‘bully-off’. They showed the kit their goalkeepers have, which offers much better protection than the wicket-keeper’s pads of yesteryear, but at much greater cost. Similarly with headgear necessary to protect against the modern ‘drag flick’ where players with sticks that have a 'bow' or curve can sling a ball as fast as 80 mph. Games are also faster through being played on Astroturf, though that does have the hazard of friction burns! Other changes concerned BHC itself, which is expanding its Mens, Womens and Junior sections, their womens team arising from successful ‘Back to Hockey’ sessions held by the Club. Numerous questions showed how many memories had been stirred by the hockey duo’s presentation, who were accompanied by BHC's Chairman, Chris Clayton, and Secretary, Paddy Jones. Rtn Andrew Matthews, also Captain of BHC 4th Team, gave the vote of thanks.
