Buxton Rotarians were introduced to the important work of Brainstrust, a brain cancer charity, by Frances Milburn, who herself had a brain tumour diagnosed at 19 after collapsing in America. Following emergency operations, and further treatment at the Christie, she wanted to talk about her feelings to others with similar experiences, but there was no support beyond the hospital. Eventually she discovered Brainstrust, started in 2006 by Helen and Peter Bulbeck, when they found no co-ordinated support after their daughter suffered a brain tumour, also at 19. Frances, as a result of talking with Brainstrust advisers, who themselves had experienced brain cancer (or a family member had), joined Brainstrust as a fundraiser for Sheffield and the North.
