School pupils from across the local area demonstrated creativity, teamwork and technical skill at this year’s Rotary Tech Tournament, an event designed to challenge and inspire the next generation of engineers and problem solvers.
Teams from Stokesley School, Whitby School and Fylinghall School took part across both Foundation and Intermediate levels. Outwood Normanby had also been due to attend with three teams but were unfortunately forced to withdraw at short notice after their school suffered significant damage during high winds the night before.
Despite this setback, the competition went ahead with a strong field of entrants and an impressive standard of work throughout the day.
In the Foundation category, Fylinghall Team 2 secured first place, followed by Whitby School in second and Fylinghall Team 1 in third. The Intermediate category saw Fylinghall School take top honours, with Stokesley School Team 1 finishing second and Whitby School Team 1 in third place.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of the Fred Payne Cup, awarded to the team that demonstrated outstanding teamwork. This year’s award went to Whitby School’s Foundation Team, recognised by judges for their collaborative approach and effective problem solving.
The event was made possible thanks to the generous support of sponsors Anglo American and Cleveland Scientific, alongside an anonymous donation from a Rotary club member which funded the awards.
Organisers praised all participants for their enthusiasm and ingenuity, noting that events such as the Tech Tournament play an important role in encouraging young people to explore science, technology and engineering in a practical and engaging way.
With another successful year concluded, the Rotary club looks forward to building on this momentum and welcoming even more teams in future competitions.
