Youth Speaks 2024

Wed, Nov 27th 2024 at 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

The Rotary Club of Whitby and District held Youth Speaks 2024 on Wednesday 27th November at 4.30pm at Whitby School.

This week 6 local teams competed for the Rotary Club of Whitby and District's annual debating event, Youth Speaks. The 3 teams from Whitby School and 3 from Fyling Hall were all of a similar age, the Intermediate level, aged 11-13. They had to choose one from a list of 10 topics, including issues such as refugees, carbon footprints, the Internet, religion and sport. They then had to plan and deliver speeches, one in favour of the question set and one against, with the 3rd. team member acting as Chairman. Not an easy task!

The rules made for a lively competition and gave the young people taking part the invaluable experience of delivering a speech in front of an audience. As usual our local youngsters stepped up to meet the requirements and there were some sterling performances all round. A good audience attended the event which was kindly hosted by Whitby School. Warm appreciation of all the efforts was shown.
The winning team were from Whitby School itself and consisted of Christine Zang, Chloe Stringer and Lilac Cavany-Bearman. They spoke with passion on the issue of whether this country should welcome more refugees.

This year’s adjudicators were David Bradley and Chris Gozzard, both former teachers, who did a fine job, giving each team some very useful advice in an atmosphere of constructive encouragement.

The prize for Best Individual Speaker went to Annabel Fusco of Fyling Hall School who spoke with passion and authority and without reference to any written notes.

Mike Stones, the organizer, said ” We, at the Rotary Club, are once again proud to be able to deliver a competition which challenged young people to be brave and stand before an audience to present a debate on a topical issue. Our local youngsters responded to that challenge magnificently. Well done to all those taking part!”
