As members of a new Rotary Club, Reading Thames Rotarians are keen to support a number of projects and activities that improve aspects of life or provide new opportunities in the local community.
A project already under way is run in partnership with Launchpad.Reading. a Charity striving to help the homeless or those at risk of homlessness in this area.
Club Members are spending time digging and preparing an Allotment used by Launchpad volunteers to help their clients rebuild their lives, by learning new skills.
The Allotment is a vital facility for introducing clients to gardening skills and allows them the opportunity to experience the satisfaction of growing their own produce.
After harvest the vegetables are put to good use, as the Clients are taught to prepare and cook them producing healthy meals on a budget, developing life skills, building social skills and increasing confidence in the process.
The Allotment project is part of Launchpad's multi-faceted work to help clients build their self-esteem and confidence while learning skills to give them the very best chance of success in life.
For the Rotarians involved in the project it’s an opportunity to provide practical help to those having a hard time as they work to turn their lives around. By giving of their time and energy the Rotarians provide much needed help to Launchpad Reading.
This is a good example of how Rotarian's use their personal skills, experience tand effort to improve life for others in the local Community.
Helping others is not just about financial aid, 'hands-on' practical help is often much more welcome.
