Club Meeting

This week our speakers were Christine Hall and Terry Wilkinson from the Harrogate Repair Café, seen here with Knaresborough Rotary President Stephanie Blevins.  A more straight forward voluntary organisation than the popular TV programme the Repair Shop, the Repair Café aims to repair ordinary items that would otherwise end up in landfill. Started in the Netherlands in 2007 by Martine Postma, a Dutch environmentalist and former journalist, the Repair Café concept has spread with over 3,900 cafes established globally. There are 14 Repair Cafes in Yorkshire and Christine and Terry are now going to open one at the Chain Lane Community Hub in Knaresborough on 26^th September. The Harrogate Repair Café meets at the Quaker Meeting House from 12 Noon to 4pm on the 3^rd Saturday each month. All sorts of items can be repaired including jewellery, table lamps, clocks and electrical items. Volunteers assess whether items are repairable (with about a 57% success rate), and advise on where to obtain spare parts if needed. Run as a Not-for-Profit Common Interest Company, donations cover the cost of the venue hire and insurance. Knaresborough Rotary Club regularly welcomes interesting speakers on a variety of topics. Next month we look forward to hearing from the two young people who we sponsored on the residential RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) course this summer.
