Bradgate's Best Brains

Rotary team second in East Midlands quiz

Nicki Little's piano has fewer keys than most. How many is usual?

How many keys are there on a piano?

Three members of Bradgate Rotary plus one spouse set off for a golf club near Peterborough on Wednesday April 29 to participate in the district (East Midlands) final of the Rotary Quiz competition.  After qualifying as one of the highest scoring ‘losers’ in the previous round, President Nicki Little, Alan Rockey and Judith and Paul Sharratt joined 14 other teams to face nine rounds of questions, each on a theme.  Each round had ten questions apart from the table round which required us to solve 20 cryptic clues to give the names of London underground stations.  Themes for the other rounds included Odd One Out, Food and Drink, Money and the Missing Link.  There was also a round where all the answers were numbers which had to add up to 1070, our District number.   Hence the question about piano keys.

After every two rounds the totals were calculated and we managed to stay first or second throughout.  At the end we were narrowly beaten by Wellingborough, who scored 89, just 0.5 points more than our 88.5.

Our thanks go to everyone who was involved in organising the quiz and the preceding meal and to the question setter(s) for keeping us on our (mental) toes.

For your information there are 88 keys on a standard piano.  But for some reason mine only has 85!
