This week’s speaker is Dr Keith Tovey who is going to talk to us about the interesting and turbulent history of the Rotary Club of Shanghai - being the first Rotary club to be established in China in 1919.
The Shanghai club has a complex and unsettled history as it was originally chartered in 1919 [#545] as the first club in China. It was readmitted to the Rotary world as club [#60725] chartered 8 February 2006.
During the war years the club experienced some challenges and struggles which Keith will explore as art of his talk. Developing Rotary in China remains a fascinating one because Chinese citizens resident in China are not allowed to join clubs [unless they have another nationality passport].
As you probably know we have a Chinese citizen member Vivian living in Beijing who is a full Rotarian because she is a member of our club which of course is outside their country.
