End Polio Now

Fundraising and raising awareness of the efforts of Rotary to rid the world of POLIO

End Polio Now Day - Tuesday 24 October 2017

To mark Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now Day’ the five Rotary Clubs in Dundee have joined forces with the City Council and Bonnie Dundee to plant 20,000 crocus bulbs at sites in the city at Riverside Avenue, Craigie Drive/Dundee Road West junction. The crocuses will have purple flowers reflecting the dye applied to childrens’ fingers when they are immunised against polio.

In 1985 Rotary Foundation initiated an international effort to totally eradicate polio. At that time there were an estimated 350,000 cases in 125 countries - 1000 new cases per day - and following intensive immunisation programmes (2.5 billion children immunised in 122 countries) in partnership with World Health Organisation, UNICEF and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, there were fewer than 40 cases reported in 2016. Since then Rotary worldwide has raised $850 million supported by $400 million from the Gates Foundation. This remarkable partnership had been intensified with the Foundation promising to match Rotary donations on a 2 for 1 basis up to $35 million per year at least up to 2018. Rotary Clubs in the UK have so far donated more than £20million to the campaign and the work continues.
