Medway Sunlight Rotary is just one of 116 teams of 5 people that have been selected to carry the Paralympic torch in the relay ending at the Olympic Stadium on the 29th August.
The Club entered a competition run by BT, one of the offical partners for the Paralympic Games, and after submitting a short statement on why they should be chosen were notified that they had been placed on a shortlist. Further checks and consideration by the the Organising Committee finally led to confirmation today (May 15th) that the team are going to take part in this wonderful celebaration.
In 150 words this is why we wanted to take part -
Medway Sunlight is a new Rotary Club with a difference, making a difference!
Many members have overcome personal challenges but are still committed to helping others less fortunate. Shortly after overcoming cancer, Sonia went to Sri Lanka to provide education and hope for over 1500 children.
Steve, wheelchair bound following an operation for testicular cancer, showed determination to get back on his feet and is abseiling down a 50m tower to inspire others that anything is possible!
Nicola was able to locate a surgeon in Bristol for a youngster needing an operation to improve his mobility instead of him travelling to America.
After leading fund raising Bill will be accompanying a group of children with terminal illness to live the dream at Eurodisney.
In carrying the torch we wish to salute the dedicated Paralympians who have overcome their own challenges to compete in the greatest sporting event of their lives
Check out the details of the team and the relay itself on the official London 2012 website
We will be bringing more news on this wonderful opportunity as the story unfolds.
