The annual Foulness Bike Ride organised by the Rotary clubs of Southend City and Thorpe Bay took place on 21st July. This popular charity event gave entrants the rare opportunity to visit the restricted Ministry of Defence site on Foulness Island which is normally closed to visitors. Almost 600 riders of all ages on a wide variety of types of bike accepted the challenge. On a pleasant calm and dry summer day they rode across the island from the entry checkpoint at Landwick to the Heritage Centre at Church End and back enjoying the natural landscape and birdlife. Restrictions imposed by the Ministry of Defence meant that everyone who entered the island had to be registered, allocated an identification number and accounted for on their return and exit at the end of the event. No photographs were allowed to be taken of the site or participants while on the island.
The team from Hadleigh Castle Rotary helped on the day with rider registration and stewarding on the course and in the case of our President Jed Brooks taking part and cycling the whole way round.
The event raised funds for the important Spotlight Appeal by Southend Hospital.
