Beaujolais & Balsam - Wayford Woods

Thu, Jul 16th 2026 at 6:45 pm - 9:00 pm

Wayford Wood (first car park you reach on the right). Please wear appropriate clothing/footwear, gardening gloves and, if you need it, insect repellant.

This years Beaujolais and Balsam evening will be on Thursday 16th July at Wayford Woods. Meet at 6.45pm in the main car park for a 7pm start.
The format will be the same as previous years. At 7pm one of the Trustees of Wayford Woods will direct us to areas where the balsam is most prevalent. We will pull up balsam from 7-8pm followed by cheese, wine and soft drinks in the old shed.

If you haven't been before it is a fun evening, the 'weeding' is not difficult as the balsam has very shallow roots. Wear sensible shoes or boots, especially if it is wet, and gardening gloves. I will have some spare gloves if you forget or do not have any.

We ask for a donation of £10 which will go towards the upkeep of the woods. If you are not able to help with the weeding do come along for the cheese and wine.

Hymalayan balsam is a large annual plant native to the Hymalayas. It has been introduced to the UK and is considered to be an invasive species. The Trustees and volunteers of Wayford Woods are trying to eradicate the balsam from the woods.

To get to the woods drive through the village, pass the church on the left and continue on. The the road will become a rough track keep going until you come to the woods main car park on the right
