The Rotary Club of Wendover and District and John Colet School, Wendover held their 2012 Christmas Short Story Competition prize giving at John Colet School on the evening of 30th January 2013.
For the third year running, Wendover Rotary in conjunction with John Colet School, Wendover, have held a Christmas Short Story competition under the guidance of Sandra Maizels, Vice President and New Generations Convenor of Wendover Rotary.
Year 6 pupils (age 10-11 yrs) from five local primary schools , most of which feed John Colet Academy, accepted an invitation to take part in the competition to write any original story with a Christmas theme. The rules were drawn up by senior John Colet students and Wendover Rotary. The stories were to be judged on content alone.
This year a record 210 entries were received and all the entries were read by judges from Wendover Rotary Club and the 2010 Book Club. An initial long list of twenty stories were chosen, all of which were printed in a professionally produced and illustrated books which were sold at the prize giving to cover the cost of production.
A shortlist of thirteen stories, compiled from the top stories from the participating schools, was then sent to a panel of student judges from John Colet School who selected the top three stories.
All twenty authors on the longlist were awarded prizes of a certificate and dictionary, sponsored by Wendover Rotary, and an Amazon token sponsored by the Harpenden Building Society, who had also sponsored the printing of the book for the first competition.
