Nobody escapes Grosgreifer

Bröckedde is located in the heart of Germany - where the Rhine and Danube flow into the beautiful Bröckeddesee. This is where RC Bröckedde meets in the Bröckedder Hof - every Wednesday at 1 pm in the Salon Hindenburg.

At a recent committee meeting, President Propke remarked that with so many highfliers in the Club, it was a great pity that so few seemed willing to step up to the podium and give a presentation. Professor Dr Krümelein, the Club’s mighty intellectual, was in full agreement “Our current presentation organiser is giving up, completely exhausted with the task of finding suitable speakers. However, I can recommend a successor; Friend Großgreifer, he’s an absolute star in business acquisitions”.

“Nobody escapes Großgreifer” was saying at the major insurance company, where he worked. He was such a convincing salesman that most Club members now had at least three life policies, a catch-all package plus the latest plan against being over-insured.

Großgreifer took to the task like a duck to water. Within a few weeks he had softly kneaded promises of Fellowship presentations from each one of the Club’s leading personalities. However, there remained a challenge; Friend Topftrauer, a very respected academic at Bröckedde’s university. Großgreifer invited the Topftrauer couple to Bröckedde’s best restaurant, where they enjoyed an excellent meal and thoroughly enjoyable evening, marred only by Frau Topftrauer commenting sadly that she hardly ever saw her husband due to pressure of work and his lecture tours abroad. However, Großgreifer achieved his aim and extracted a promise to give a presentation although the lofty academic was a bit vague over dates.

Weeks then months passed with no presentation date confirmed. Großgreifer took to attending University lectures where he would wave a Rotary flag and his calendar of speakers. Topftrauer would always renew his promise to give the presentation yet remained as elusive as ever over when that might be.

After a whole year of waiting, a Club initiative gave Großgreifer another idea. A display board had been hung in the Salon Hindenburg with the heading – RC Bröckedde Latest – giving details of the Club’s programme, projects and other activities. Großgreifer made his own entry, “Friend Topftrauer lectures everywhere, except to us – 400 days and still waiting”.

Not long after the Club held its annual autumn dinner to which wives or husbands and other partners were warmly welcomed and Frau Topftrauer was one of the guests. The Salon Hindenburg was full to bursting point and an excellent evening was enjoyed by as was the talented speaker. However, the new display board had not gone unnoticed because shortly after, the following entry appeared:

“Friend Großgreifer is busy everywhere but seldom with his wife – last visit to a concert together was 6122 days ago”.
