Business:
Gerri’s Induction: Nick began this by reminding everyone of the motto – ‘Service above Self’. Margaret read the Objects of Rotary. Pete said a few words about Gerri, commending her to the club. Robert took some photos for the Face Book page.
Social: Pat said that next week is the final week for expressing an interest in the proposed late afternoon’s adventure golf at Quex Park.
Fund Raising: David M confirmed that the Race Night raised £1650, and the recent car parking raised another £650.
International: Andrew’s committee met last week. Andrew said he was pleased that Gerri attended this. District has sent round an email about contributing to a Shelter Box for the Pakistan Flood Emergency. Andrew B has responded to this in citing our regular donations to Shelter Box. Andrew proposed that we fund another Box. This was seconded by Nick, and carried by a show of hands.
Any Other Business:
Regarding the Golf Day, Nick said a thank you to Lesley; Neil won a £100 voucher for golf equipment which he has donated as a raffle prize.
Pete mentioned he has another potential interested member. Pete also updated the club about David B who is in hospital at QEQM. He will be home when the latter can arrange a suitable care package.
Maureen conveyed thanks from the Whit & Tank hospital for the recent gardening clear up.
Speaker: Dr Laura Smith spoke about the new Parkinsons Centre for Integrated Therapy at Canterbury, the full launch of which will be next year The number of people with Parkinsons is increasing; it is estimated that 1 in 37 people will be living with Parkinsons by 2065. Apart from the evident physical symptoms there are a number of less visible ones, including mental health problems. There a number of non-drug based therapies available to support sufferers but at present they are scattered and uncoordinated – hence the need for the Centre. The centre will also have a function of raising awareness of non visible symptoms. Contact: parkinsons@kent.ac.uk.
Responding to questions, Laura said that sufferers can self refer. The service is free but donations are welcome. Also, the site will allow for services to be expanded in the long term. Sufferers will be able to access advice online.
Raffle: Was won by Dave C, and Gerri.
Master-at-Arms: According to Nick, today is World Letter Writing Day. Tomorrow is World Coconut Day. Also, on this day in 1963, Cliff Richards and the Shadows were the first top ten UK group to perform in Israel.
