ROTARY CLUB OF CHESTFIELD
Breakfast Meeting 27th August 2020 @ 8.00am vis Zoom
Present: Andrew B (President); Dave C; Pat; Sue; Andrew & Jean M; Lesley;
Godfrey; Kathryn; Robert; Pete.
Apologies: Hilary sent her apologies; other members don’t do Zoom.
General: The current agreement under which the club is operating is that six former presidents will serve for two months each for this year (2020 / 2021). Under this arrangement, Andrew is due to step down shortly, and Kathy take over from 3rd September.
However, after last week’s meeting at the Plough, several members met with Andrew and made a case for changing this for reasons of continuity – two months was felt to be too short a period. Andrew has since spoken to other members over the phone, and there is a clear feeling that we can’t move forward until we settle this issue. Members present discussed various options, including having the same president for 4 months at a time, 3 months at a time etc.
After discussion the following plan was put forward: Andrew will step down from 3rd September, and Kathy will take over. Kathy will serve as President until after Xmas. Following Xmas, one of the past presidents (who has agreed so far to serve for two months) will be asked to take over as president for the remaining six months of the year.
This plan will need to be approved by the Board first, then voted on by the membership at the next breakfast meeting (next week at the Plough). So, Actions:
1. Dave C to send these minutes to the Board members asap and the latter to respond with comments to Dave / Andrew.
2. Once the Board have had time to respond (say, by late Monday) Dave C to send these minutes to all club members. Anyone who can’t make the Thursday meeting, please send comments to Andrew / Dave.
3. Those past presidents who were due to serve for two months under the old arrangement, please consider if you are prepared to serve for six months after Xmas, and if so, let Andrew / Dave C know for circulation to the rest of the Board.
Other Items: The Rotary Ride from Reculver to Minnis Bay. We have said we will do this on Saturday 5th September with an option to change to the 6th if the weather forecast looks dodgy. We have previously said we would meet at Reculver at 1.00pm. Agreed: Confirm arrangements next Thursday at breakfast, by which time we should have a reliable weather forecast.
Car Parking: Godfrey will email a reminder to all those who have volunteered for the week end. It will be a Bank Holiday. Volunteers are urged to make use of the walkie-talkies.
Emptying Ron’s Garage: Talk to Ron next week about a date for this. Next weekend is the Rotary Ride, and the week after the Skydive.
Green Lanyards: Should we be supporting this, it’s not clear that this scheme is very widely known. Kathy is doing an online briefing about mental health shortly and will mention the scheme as part of the briefing. One of the e-documents sent out by David M in the last few days was about this scheme. Strong feeling that whatever else we do, we should not become responsible for handing the things out to the public.
Photo Competition: Dave C said he thought the photo of the bee on the flower was a worthy winner; well judged, Pat.
Next Week @ the Plough: Lesley asked – if there is going to be a lot to discuss next week, should she postpone her presentation about the satisfaction survey? If she is going to go ahead, she will need the screen and the projector. Lesley added that there are several additional members wanting to come to the meeting next week – is there a maximum the Plough can accommodate? No, not that we are aware. Finally, when members send apologies, it’s not always clear which meeting they mean. All members are reminded they should send apologies to Lesley before tea time on Tuesday, and specify which date they mean (unless Lesley already has a standing arrangement to count them as apologies)..
Pat said that she will be at the pop-up shop in Harbour Street, Whitstable next week. To all members, please visit (and buy something?).
Next Meeting: Thursday 3rd September, 07.15am for 07.30am, @
The Plough.
