Pete has nearly achieved his target of 1000000 steps - doing 2.5 to 3 hours walking
a day his current total is 910000 steps.

Tomorrow’s Golf day is all in hand, any more raffle prizes Godfrey is happy to
receive at the golf club tomorrow from 9.30 am.
Gardening Saturday 9am, Maureen will delegate the various chores
Membership
- Sarah has engaged in a number of Rotary membership events which she is
internalising and will provide an update to the Board for discussion with the club.
- Still no joy from Sainsbury’s for the membership drive!
MacMillan Cancer Support
- Becky introduced herself,she is a local girl. Covers the whole of Kent.
- Douglas MacMillan founded the charity in 1911 following the death his father of
oesophageal cancer. Obviously much has changed over 115 years focusing on
improving the experience of people with cancer.
- In EastKent two posts previously funded by MacMillan have become NHS funded
posts: skin care/ melanoma nurse consultant and a metastatic colorectal nurse
specialist. Both posts are making a measurable difference to the lives of people
affected by such cancers.
- MacMillan works in partnership with Boots to provide accessible information and
support through information pharmacists, No 7 beauty advisors and opticians -
locally there are MacMillan pharmacists in Whitstable, Herne Bay and Canterbury

Whitefriars Boots; MacMillan beauty advisors and opticians are based in
Whitefriars. They can all provide advice as well as signposting to other services
and professionals.
- The MacMillan national support line supported 2857 people in Kent last year. The
support line includes advisers,nurse specialists and money advice teams. All
these services are available to friends and family as well as the individual with
cancer.
- It is projected that the number of people living with cancer will increase to 4
million by 2030, the demand on NHS and MacMillan services will be challenging.
98% MacMillan funding is through donations. Examples of where money goes
include: £500 funds 962 copies of the Cancer Guide; £1000 covers the cost of a
MacMillan support worker for over a week and £2500 helps run the online
community forum for 72 hours supporting approximately 5000 to read, share
experiences and support each other.
- Pete thanked Becky for her informative talk, Beck thanked the club for her
breakfast and speakers fee.
AOB
- A Shelterbox rep is joining us on 5/11 to present us with a silver certificate (paper
version) for the £4700 we have donated.
- Sarah said she felt very proud of our clubs achievements from a fundraising and
social perspective compared to other clubs at the recent events she has attended
- Evening meeting food choices need to be confirmed by 14/09, please ensure you
have made yours.

Master at Arms
- We were fined for leery looks, crocs and marmite, questioning 900000 steps -
is he counting the dogs too, Italian cookery, singing soprano, and wearing a
truss!
- Dave then regaled us with a poem - Something about oregano….
