An endowed school is an educational
institution that receives financial support from
a permanent fund, known as an endowment,
established by private donors, charities, or
historical trusts. The donated money is
invested, and the school uses a portion of the
1
generated income to fund operations,
maintain buildings, or provide scholarships.
While some endowed schools are private, feepaying
institutions, many operate as statefunded
public schools. In the UK, these
schools were typically founded centuries ago
(often by local benefactors or the Church) and
still receive "top-up" funding from their
foundational charitable trusts to enhance
resources beyond what the government
provides.
