Bolton Wildlife Competition 2026

Go Wild in Your Garden!

Across the UK, numbers of bees, butterflies, birds and other wildlife are in worrying decline, largely due to habitat loss, pollution and changes in how we use our land. Gardens, once rich with flowers, insects and birdsong, have increasingly become paved, tidied or simplified spaces that offer little for nature. Yet these same spaces hold enormous potential. That’s why we’re launching the Big Bolton Wildlife Friendly Garden Competition — to help turn everyday spaces into vital refuges where nature can thrive.

The idea is simple: by making just one or two small changes at home, each of us can play a meaningful role in supporting local wildlife. Planting nectar-rich flowers, leaving a patch of grass to grow wild, adding a small water source, or creating shelter with logs or shrubs can all make a difference. When many households take these steps together, the collective impact can be huge—creating a network of mini habitats that allow insects, birds and other wildlife to feed, breed and move safely through our communities.

Importantly, you don’t need a large garden—or even a garden at all—to get involved. Window boxes, tubs, balconies, yards and shared spaces can all be transformed into thriving mini wildlife havens. A few carefully chosen plants or a small container pond can quickly attract pollinators and other creatures. Nature is remarkably resilient when given the chance.

It also doesn’t need to cost a lot. With a small outlay, a bit of creativity and some imagination, anyone can create a welcoming space for wildlife. Reusing materials, growing from seed, or swapping plants with neighbours are all simple, low-cost ways to get started. This competition is about celebrating those efforts—big or small—and inspiring more people across Bolton to take part in helping nature bounce back, one household at a time.

Get involved for the chance to win a great prize!
