Charlotte Edwards from Cancer Research North West recently gave a very good presentation on the workings and research being carried out by the Charity, which was well received by members and friends of the Ambleside Kirkstone Rotary Club.
Cancer Research North West is an independent charity which was created in 1948 at the same time that the National Health Service, although its roots can be traced back to the 1920’s. The primary focus of the charity is putting the NW England’s region cancer needs first by funding pioneering research to tackle the cause, improve the care and find the cure for cancer and being based in the NW region identifying the most common types of cancer that affect people living across North West England and North Wales.In the area specific to Cumbria a detailed comparison between Kendal and Barrow in Furness showed that the former has a higher incidence of Head and Skin cancer and the latter with Liver, Bowel or pancreatic cancers. The research determines which cancers are based on lifestyle or genetic, environmental or other conditions.
A lively discussion followed the presentation and subsequently a donation was made to the charity by President Val Sykes on behalf of the club.
