Post Match Report

After a few moments when a downpour threatened to wash out the match, the teams managed a complete innings of 20 overs and managed to score precisely 100 runs each.  The result, therefore, was a very honourable tie at the end of a very enjoyable evening.

Wootton Bassett & District Rotary Club opened the batting and scored steadily - helped by the sometimes wayward bowling of the Wootton Bassett Town Rotary Club team - and succeeded in scoring the 100th run in the very last over.

The Town team took to the field next and, like the England team, lost 2 important batsmen very quickly.  However, nerves were calmed and the score rose slowly towards the target of 101.  Young and old scored well and Barbara did a wonderful job as a runner for Ray despite her total lack of knowledge of the rules of cricket.  Eventually, the team reached the final over with 100 runs scored.  Five balls to play and one run needed to secure a third win.  Four balls to go and nearly a 'wide' claimed.  Three balls, two balls and still that final run remained unscored.  On the last ball of the game it was 'all or nothing'.  Whatever happened, the batsmen were going to run................but, of course the unexpected happened and defensive bowling from Michael Pain turned into attack and clean bowled Harry to end the game with a tie.  Well that's what happens when golfers play cricket!!
