With the end of the Rotary year fast approaching, a Summer BBQ was organised to celebrate yet another successful year for Chichester Harbour Rotary Club.
The venue for this momentous occasion was the garden at Cloisters Cafe at Chichester Cathedral: a stunning location with the Cathedral spire as a backdrop with resident peregrine falcons looking down on the proceedings and our meaty treats.
The 60+ attendees, which included guests from Chichester's other Rotary Clubs, were blessed with beautiful weather.
The evening also saw the culmination of our Club's first ever potato-growing competition. This proved to be a very eagerly contested event with numerous members taking part.
In a nutshell, members were encouraged to purchase a seedling potato from competition organiser, Jeremy Webb, and the overall winner was the person who managed to produce the biggest crop from their single seed potato! Bragging rights went to long-standing member David Hilditch. Other awards were given to those who produced the smallest crop, the smallest individual potato (there were numerous contenders for this particular award!) and the most unusually shaped spud.
The funds raised will go towards funding the sterling work undertaken by the Club's Youth committee.
What might club members be challenged to grow next year?!
The evening also saw our Club's President, Barbara Spearman, praising the work of some of the Club's 'unsung heroes'. The efforts of Elaine Hind, Malcolm Danks, Marian Scott, Mary Turner, Linda Smith and Lucy Hopkins were acknowledged by way of individual certificates.
The overall winner of the 2024-2025 'Unsung Hero Award' was Mary Turner for all the fundraising work she undertakes in selling donated items on eBay and other outlets. This activity has resulted in a very valuable income stream for our local community work.
