District 1090 Conference
March 18th – 20th 2022
A District Conference is held about this time every year and the 1600 Rotarians in the District are invited to attend with partners and/or guests. This year the venue was a Conference centre in Oxford. Proceedings commence on the Friday when six of us attended a theatre/supper evening just north of Oxford and watched two short plays written by Joan Greening – a member of the Elthorne-Hillingdon club. In between these, an excellent meal was served as the pictures confirm.
Saturday morning saw eleven of us board a (late) coach to the Conference centre where there were some excellent presentations, notably Dame Sarah Gilbert of Covid vaccine fame, and Nelson Mandela’s former bodyguard, Chris Lubbe who described the trials and tribulations of his life.
Saturday evening saw ten of us check into en-suite accommodation at Keble college followed at 7pm with a presentation by Joan Greening regarding the famous painting, “Light of the World” by William Holman Hunt which had been bequeathed to Keble. Our Rotary scholar, Annika, joined us.
This was followed by an excellent dinner in the main Keble Hall, famous for being the dining room at Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series.
Sunday morning gave the opportunity of a guided tour by Rotary scholars around various colleges. We chose Green Templeton – a college that major in Astronomy from the 1750s and still retained the original observatory. See the team photograph with our scholar guide!
We then went officially on a Keble tour.
Midday saw our coach arrive for a quick trip back home – we all agreed what a successful weekend it had been.
