An event that started 21 years ago by the Marlow Rotary Clubs with just a handful of runners has now grown to its maximum capacity. Naomi Riches MBE started the race at the bottom of the High Street, and the participants took a full 12 minutes to clear the start line. The race was led up the High Street by a team of cyclists and a pace car, followed by the traditional sea of red.
Around 200 volunteers helped the Rotary Clubs of Marlow stage the event and large numbers of spectators – estimated at well over 2000 - lined the route to witness the spectacle. The Marlow Jam Theatre Company again provided live entertainment in the High Street, and despite some gloomy weather everyone seemed to have a good time.
The final sum raised will not be known until all competing charities and fundraisers have completed their fund raising, but the Rotary Clubs of Marlow confirm that they hope for close to £100,000 to have been raised from all sources. Initial cheques of £4000 each were presented to this year’s lead charities – to SCANNAPPEAL and the HEART of BUCKS “TOGETHER AGAINST POVERTY” campaign.
