Rona 2023

As in previous years, Marlow Thames once again sponsored four youngsters to go on a week’s sailing experience with The Rona Sailing Project.

This year we sponsored four Adult Carers from Bucks Carers on the Rona Sailing Project’s 70-foot yachts.

Two 18 year old boys and two girls of similar age went this year.

The girls went first at the end of July and the skipper who has been with Rona for over 10 years said it was the roughest trip he had ever sailed on. Gale force winds all the way to Alderney. Nevertheless they left Rona’s base on the River Hamble, Southampton and after 13 hours at sea arrived at Alderney, Channel Isles, at four o’clock in the morning.

They stayed in Alderney for a couple of days to recover then sailed on to Guernsey. From there they sailed to Weymouth which was a more comfortable trip.

A very testing trip for everyone including the Skipper and his Assistants(2). In view of this all of the youngsters were given the Amery Award for outstanding achievement.

The two boys sailed at the end of August and had far kinder weather. They took

the same route as the girls but their trip was not quite so challenging.

All of them said they thoroughly enjoyed the experience, two said they would like to go again, the other two were not quite so sure.
