Theme – Actions to support our Environment

Young people, with the support of their school, Scout, Guide or other community, are invited to present a project on one or more topics concerning reducing waste or carbon emissions.

The project will show understanding of the topic, why it is important and offer some solutions to problems. If there are financial costs involved, these should be worked out.

Choose a topic from the following list or decide and explore your own topic within the themes of waste or carbon emission reduction.

PROJECT IDEAS

Do come up with your own ideas but here are some examples:-

  • Plant seeds or bulbs and compare how they grow in different environments
  • Plant some native trees or hedging: how will you monitor their progress
  • Go net zero: work out the carbon footprint for your team or family and suggest how to reduce it. For example: reduce travel in private vehicles and document the environmental savings.
  • Recycle, Re-purpose, Re-use e.g. survey people's attitudes to the 'R's and suggest how the attitudes and behaviour could be changed. Or, explore ways to reduce unnecessary throwing away of viable products and turn them into useful objects or works of art.
  • Food Waste: think of ways to reduce food waste, at school, at home or in the Community
  • Litter: maps photographic evidence of litter in a part of your environment then engage in litter picking with video or documentary evidence or the weight of litter collected. How will this litter then be discarded and how might you discourage people from littering there in the future.

What the Judges will be looking for:

That your presentation shows understanding of how your project will support our Environment, why it is important and the practicalities of putting your project into action.
