Talk: Professor Catherine Noakes - a member of the SAGE Covid-19 Group "Pandemic 101 - Reflections on How to Control a Virus"

Mon, Apr 25th 2022 at 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Cath Noakes OBE is Professor of Environmental Engineering for Buildings at the University of Leeds. She is a chartered mechanical engineer who leads research into ventilation and infection control in the built environment. Since April 2020 she has been involved in the Covid-19 response, leading the Environment and Modelling sub-group of the UK Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) focusing on the science underpinning environmental transmission.
Cath was one of the guest lecturers on the 2021 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, presenting the physics of virus transmission and the role of engineering in the response.

As one of Professor Sir Jonathan Van Tam’s presenters in the lectures, she demonstrated to a mixed audience of students how aerosol dispersal works - it sounds a heavy subject but she made it so much fun that anyone watching would come away with a clearer understanding of the mechanics!
