In 2012/13 Rotary year the Club International Committee chose two charities as the focus for fundraising. The theme for the year was India and the Committee supported:
To raise money for the Gian Foundation, in October 2012 members, guests and friends assembled at the Red Chilli on High Street, Northallerton and enjoyed a banquet of popadoms and pickles, various starters and a range of curry dishes, rices and naans. It was a superb evening and thanks must go to Rahman and his staff for making the event possible.
At a Club meeting in November 2012 members heard presentations from the two overseas charities chosen for support this year by the International Committee.
Firstly Yashpal Anand supported by his wife Gillian spoke about the Gian Foundation which provides educational support to mainly blind and orphaned children, many in India. A donation of £40 can provide the necessary books and equipment for a child for a year. Then Club member Muttu Puranik informed members about the Lourdes Hospital in his home town in India and the support needed.
At the end of the evening President Sue Adsett presented a cheque to Yashpal for £232 which was the proceeds from the Curry Night. Pictured L to R are Gillian Anand, Yashpal Anand and Club President Sue Adsett.
In December 2011 we held a "Castoff Classy Clothing" sale to raise money for a borehole project in Zambia, through a charity Zest-UK
Many of our members and friends donated items of 'classy castoffs' including good quality clothes, hats, bags and hats. At the sale we raised over £400, and further amounts were raised from the sale of stock after the event. The remaining items went to one of the Charity shops in town and the proceeds from that and the related gift aid will further help charities to carry out their work.
The second International charity supported during the 2011/12 Rotary year was the District Ukerewe project.
In the first part of the Rotary year members were busy collecting items to go in the District container being shipped to the island. The main event in the second half of the year centred around a fundraising charity concert. Northallerton Amateur Variety Company agreed to give a concert with the proceeds being split between Herriot Hospice Homecare, a local cancer charity, and Northallerton Mowbray RC who were donating all it's monies to the District Ukerewe project.
'Songs from Stage and Screen' took place in March 2012 in Northallerton Town Hall and it played to a full house. The Society sang songs from shows including Les Miserables, Oliver, Fiddler on the Roof and Hairspray, and from films including Forest Gump and Mary Poppins. The show was thoroughly enjoyed by an appreciative audience. The event was managed jointly by all three organisations, with the charities also running a bar and a raffle.
The event raised a magnificent sum of almost £1300, split equally between Herriot Hospice Homecare and Northallerton Mowbray RC for the Ukerewe project.
