For a number of years the Club have sponsored local students to attend the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) course held near Hebden Bridge.
Following their experience, students Sara-Jane Craddock, Nicole Beckwith and Tim Tombling, all from Northallerton College, attended the Club meeting on 24 September 2007 to tell members of their experience.
They gave a well-received address on the many challenges they faced, such as canoeing, crossing a gorge and raft-building. All felt they had received enormous benefits from the week-long course
Northallerton Rotary Club also participate in the sponsorship of local youths and their president, Bob Beaver, was at the presentation.

The Rotary Club of Northallerton Mowbray took part in its first ever Rotary Technology Tournament on March 4th.
The tournament was held at Catterick Garrison. Some 120 students from 11 local secondary schools, spent a day trying to make a specific type of bridge from a selection of simple materials; the bridge had to be capable of holding a weight of 1kg. The event, organised by the Rotary Clubs of Northallerton Mowbray, Northallerton, Richmond, Thirsk and Wensleydale and generously sponsored by NYBEP (the Business and Education Partnership for York and North Yorkshire), The British Army, Randall Orchard, March:engenus, North Yorkshire Timber and John Blenkiron & Sons Ltd, was a great success. The focused abilities and skill of the competing students were a joy to watch. It was great to see so many young people obviously thoroughly enjoying working hard and thinking hard. They all tackled a difficult design and construction challenge with enthusiasm and showed amazing abilities to think quickly on their feet, to innovate and to make things work. It was a triumph of skill and teamwork.
Local Rotary clubs have responded to the Government's wake-up call that the future of the British economy depends upon maintaining this country's position as a leading centre of scientific research and innovation by organising the first schools Technology Tournament in this area. The Technology Tournament is just one of the ideas developed by Rotary in the UK to encourage the development of young people. It is an opportunity for 12 to 17 year olds to enjoy a day out of school exploring technology. The students are set a task that involves designing, building and testing a machine from supplied materials under tournament conditions against the clock. The task is covered by the normal school curriculum and all students receive a personalised certificate which will be part of their CVs. The winning team in each of the three age categories receives a trophy which is then permanently held by their school. There are also medals and polo shirts awarded to the winning students. The winning teams of this tournament, as chosen by Army judges, were - Advanced(16+yrs) Richmond School; Intermediate (14-16yrs) Northallerton College; Foundation (12-14yrs) Thirsk School. Pictured above is club member Basil Bosomworth watching progress at the event.
On 9th March members and guests visited the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for a trip with Sunday lunch. Everyone had a super time and the group is pictured at the station.
Guest speaker at the Club meeting on Monday 17 March was Margaret Barron of Zoe's Place who gave a fascinating talk on the work of the baby hospice in Normanby, Middlesbrough . The hospice opened four years ago based in a former convent that took two years to convert. It offers palliative and respite care for six children aged up to five at any one time, with up to 40 accessing Zoe's Place in the course of a week. Mrs Barron reported on the valuable work in caring for youngsters with life-threatening illnesses and how the hospice helped to give a break to their parents. President Pat Ludiman presented her with a cheque for £500 from the proceeds of recent fund-raising events. Mrs Barron was thanked by Peter Gibson. Pictured above is Club President Pat Ludiman presenting the cheque to Margaret Barron.
A team of four members, Simon Kirkup, Geoff Wall, Anne Miller and Alan Miller, travelled to Otley on Wednesday 21st May to take part in the District Quiz.
23 teams participated and whilst our team didn't disgrace itself in the main quiz, it shone in the table quiz running throughout the evening, winning with a perfect score of 25 out of 25.
The 11th June saw another enjoyable day out at Lightwater Valley for over 600 children from across the District. This included 16 children visiting the UK from Chernobyl who were entertained by members of the Club. Rotarians Mark Williams, Ian Parminter, Pat Martin and Carole Ford accompanied the youngsters as they explored the exciting rides at the theme park as part of the annual Kids Out day. A Birds of Prey display and a magician provided a lunchtime show to add to the day's thrilling programme. The children were staying in the Northallerton area for a month before returning to their homes in Belarus where the effects of the radiation accident at Chernobyl are still evident.
Tne the Club held its 11th Annual Charity Golf Day. Unlike the 2007 event which had to be cancelled part-way through due to the course being flooded with thunderstorms, this year's event was held in almost perfect conditions.
Thirty-three teams participated and the Club expects to raise over two thousand pounds which will be split between three charities; The Alistair Bullen Aromatherapy Ward at Northallerton Friarage Hospital, Northdale Horticulture and the Allerton School (for Environmental projects).
The winning team was from Redcar Roofing Services and the winning Rotary Club team was from Bingley Rotary Club.
Thanks must go to Bedale Golf Club and Dave Brown for the venue and organisation, the main sponsors Batchelors of Ripon (main Suzuki agents) and to all the other sponsors, helpers and participants. Pictured above are the winning team receiving the trophy from the Club President Pat Ludiman whilst the main sponsor and Golf Club Captain look-on.
