Project in Beirut 2021

Following the explosion if a fertiliser factory in Beirut port, massive damage was
sustained by the Katarina Hospital, including the Childrens Ward.

The first
involvement we had was when Lindsey spoke to Louise, who was then President of
the Putney Rotary Club. As a Club, we said that we would be interested in getting
involved.
Shortly after that, we spoke with Habib, who agreed to join with us on a Zoom
Meeting. At that meeting, he gave a very comprehensive and heartfelt presentation,
giving us some history of the Country and details of what the project was trying to
achieve. We learned from both of them, who was involved already.
As a result of that meeting, several other local Rotary Clubs got involved. Then we
joined together with Louise and Habib who held a Zoom Meeting hosted by the Exe
Valley Rotary Club, with representatives of several other Devonian Clubs, at which
Habib repeated his talk.
Cutting a long story short, the project eventually raised over £391,000 for the
Children's Ward at Katarina Hospital and involved 150 Rotary Clubs all over the
world. Habib can probably give you the names of all the Clubs, but suffice it to say
that there were Clubs from at least three Continents involved and I think it is the
biggest project we have been involved with to date. It shows what Rotary can do if
we put our minds to it.
