During his visits, Adrian has been giving lively presentations explaining what polio is, the progress Rotary and its partners have made towards eliminating the disease, and why it is still important that the world continues the fight until polio is completely eradicated.
As part of the project, 600 crocus corms have been left at each participating school. The children have been encouraged to get involved by planting the crocuses and creating their own displays in whatever way they choose.
The crocus has a special connection with Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign, and the project gives children a fun, practical way of learning about Rotary's work while also creating something they can enjoy together.
In February, Adrian and members of Brit Valley Rotary will return to the schools to judge the displays, with the children having the opportunity to show off their creativity and see which school has created the most impressive display.
Adrian has also been taking the opportunity during his school visits to talk to the children about the many other ways Rotary supports young people, including RotaKids and Rotary youth competitions. These include opportunities such as Young Photographer, Young Artist, Young Chef, Young Speaker and other activities designed to encourage young people to develop their skills, confidence and creativity.
Adrian said:
“It has been fantastic visiting our local primary schools and seeing how enthusiastic the children are. We want them to understand that Rotary is not only about fundraising – we are also involved in some very important international projects such as the fight to eradicate polio, as well as providing opportunities for young people in our own community.”
Brit Valley Rotary would like to thank all the schools, teachers and children taking part. We can't wait to see the crocuses in flower and discover the wonderful displays the children have created!
