Charities - 2014-2015

Information on the Charities we supported in 2014/15.

Our Charities

In 2014/15 we selected several principal charities we will be supporting, in addition to that we also support a number of other local, national, international and Rotary chartities.  Here are some of the Charities we will be supporting this year under the umbrella of "THE ROTARY CLUB OF BROOKMANS PARK TRUST FUND - Registered Charity No 1021658.

Macmillan Cancer Care

Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed, you need a team of people in your corner supporting you every step of the way. Thats who Macmillan are.

Macmillan are the nurses and therapists helping you through treatment. The experts on the end of the phone. The advisers telling you which benefits youre entitled to. The volunteers giving you a hand with the everyday things. The campaigners improving cancer care. The community supporting you online, any time. The fundraisers who make it all possible.

When the time is right, you can do something to help. We can all be part of the team. We are Macmillan Cancer Support.

WheelPower is the national charity for wheelchair sport in the UK.  Funded through donations and contributions from charitable trusts, groups and individuals the charity annually tries to raise around 1 million to fund its work in providing sporting opportunities for disabled people.

The late Sir Ludwig Guttmann was the founder of WheelPower and sport for the disabled. Guttmann, a German Neurologist, set up the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in the late 1940s and introduced sport as part of the rehabilitation of his patients.

In 1948 he organized the first national competition to coincide with the London Olympic Games and in 1952 the first international events were organised at Stoke Mandeville. The work Guttmann started has now developed into a Paralympic Movement worldwide; the first games being held in Rome in 1960 and he is acknowledged as the father of the Paralympics and sport for the disabled.

WheelPower tries to ensure that there are the opportunities on offer for all who wish to take part, whether for fun or in serious competition. It is their goal to ensure that athletes are respected for their abilities and promoted for their achievements. In order to do this the WheelPower needs funding, much of which we raise through charitable donations, fundraising events and with the help of many individuals and volunteers.

Potters Bar Barracuda Swimming Club

The Club meets every Sunday between 11.30 and 12.30 at the Furzefield Centre, Potters Bar where it has exclusive use of the pool for this time.

The club provides an opportunity for disabled people to enjoy being in the water in a safe and controlled environment.  The club teaches anyone to get in the pool no matter their physical or mental disability.

Initially swimmers work one on one with an instructor whilst they gain confidence and learn to support themselves in the water.   Gradually swimmers are encouraged to become more independent until they reach the level where they are able to swim unaided.

Barracudas is run on an entirely voluntary basis of which the club can never have too many of and if you are interested in becoming an instructor please check their website for contact details.
