The Rotary Club of Yelverton and its partners hold a highly successful Fun Day for local children of primary school age on Harrowbeer Airfield on the second Wednesday in August. Under Rotary’s overarching organisation, local clubs and associations came together to provide a day of sports, arts and crafts to stimulate young people during school holidays, with a hired coach to bring children from Princetown.
Sports were provided by Dartmoor Velo, Tavyside Badminton, Okehampton Community Recreation Association and Little Dragons Martial Arts, while West Devon Scouts laid out a challenging and popular assault course. When legs became tired, children migrated to arts and crafts activities provided by Tavistock Scrapstore, SW Lakes Trust, the Friends of Princetown Library and Learn Devon. New skills were to be learned from the Stannary Brass Band, the Friends of Dartmoor Hill Pony and DNPA, who showed young children how to respect the moor, while the Coastguard and Devon & Somerset Fire Brigade showed how they reacted to emergencies.
Rotary President Pete Armstrong said, “It has been a fantastic occasion with over 500 people attending this inaugural Fun Day. It was a real pleasure to see so many children and their parents and carers enjoying themselves with the wide range of activities provided by our partner organisations. My thanks go particularly to Rotarian Pam Law, who conceived the idea and worked tirelessly to bring it to fruition with Graham Brown of Yelverton Village Park, to our sponsors and everyone who contributed to make this day a success.”
