11th September 2025 Sea & General Knowledge Quiz – Doug Downing
Generally, a social evening with Rob explaining that he and Alan F had commissioned some VoB Rotary Sweatshirts and polos locally which could be purchased for about £18. He also mentioned the Memory Café networking event that he, Chris S and Gordon had attended in Cotgrave earlier in the week, as seen on our website under latest news. Adrian then reminded us about the venue review at Whatton Jubilee Hall next week for which Maggie was preparing a ploughman’s Supper, but we would have to bring our own drinks and glasses (NB Roadworks planned on the A52 after 8pm). We were also given a form to complete that may help us make our decision on the venue choice that you could give to Alan F.
Allen then gave a brief update on the meeting held on Tuesday evening on the Membership Workshop attended by him, Alan F, Maggie and Gordon, presented by Paul and Sophie of Nottingham R C. Our main aim in attending was to learn more about their own website and social media, but there were a number of learning points:
Doug had distributed his Sea Quiz earlier to give the 4 table groups the opportunity to think about their answers, quite a challenge with 21 questions. Then he talked us through the main quiz with 26 questions covering each answer beginning in order with the 26 letters of the alphabet.
All great fun and with Top Table, consisting of Gail, Jane, Rob and Adrian scoring a total of 37 points and Adrian demonstrating his knowledge of the Seas around the World from his vast experience as BA Captain. But the winning prize was shared by all.
Gail gave the Vote of Thanks to Doug and felt that we had all learnt a lot about geography, general knowledge and possible progress on our own website having had fun with Doug’s quiz and asked members to join her in the usual warm round of applause. AR
