28th August 2025 Black and white and red in Saudi Arabia – Tony Waltham

The western mountains of Saudi Arabia have dramatic desert landscapes of eroded red sandstone   around the up-coming holiday destination of Al Ula, including the Nabataean remains at Madain Saleh (now known as Hegra); The west also contains the spectacular Black and White Volcanoes near Madinah, and the high plateau of Abha in the far south. A visit to all of these is a geological delight and also provides opportunity to sample the Saudi way of life, which is notable for its affluence. Jeddah is a seething car-centred urban sprawl, but non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the city of Makkah (Mecca). Nearly all manual work is done by immigrants from neighbouring countries, and most Saudi women are clad in the full burka and niqab, not as required by law but simply as demanded by control-freak husbands. Between isolated towns, the empty deserts seem to be occupied more by camels than by people.                 by Tony Waltham
