13th March 2025- Via Road Safety East Midlands-–Drive on! – Autumn Rose & Anna White
Autumn started their introduction objectives were: to prolong and enhance safe driving; offer advice on aspects of driving that may alter with age; Consider friends and relatives and look at what options are available. They spoke to 36000 last year in schools, young drivers and Businesses. They showed the last 5 years statistics, then did a question session, where the audience could answer with remote control devices. This covered various aspects: road conditions, definition of a dual carriageway, school crossing STOP poles, gaps in traffic (only a fool breaks the 2 second rule!). Recognition of 30mph areas relating to street lamps.
Renewing your licence once you reach 70 years old and informing the DVLA about medical conditions. They posed the question: have you ever driven in others glasses? As we mature we may experience a reduction in field of vision, slower ‘glare’ recovery and restrictions in our head, neck and shoulder movement. What can be done: regular eye tests, anti-glare glasses or additional mirrors. If you’re not feeling well DON’T drive!
Let the DVLA know about your medication, not forgetting alcohol impacts on prescription medication, have you ever taken one of hers/his pills? What about a session with a driving instructor; sign up for a free session at Morrisons Gamston. Drive each other’s cars, but you could always use a taxi
A number of technical questions followed, which Autumn readily fielded and Peter gave a vote of thanks saying that they had clearly explained how important the Highway code is and he had found the refresher very helpful and the members joined him with a stirring round of applause. AR
