20th February 2025 – The Age of Digital Insecurity
John started by telling us about his background, 22 years in the RAF, commencing with RAF Waddington and serving at 13 different units. One of his most memorable encounters was delivering a baby girl in the back of a mini. John also served in the Falklands Islands. He then under his own private company, he contracted as a computer consultant for the UK Government, the UAE, Malaysian Military Academy, Saudi Arabian MOD, Dubai Government, and several other commercials in Pakistan and India. He is a published author, and has also presented on the on cyber topics in Las Vegas, New Jersey, New York, Atlanta, Brazil, Costa Mesa, San Diego, Mexico, Rome,
John covered topics of hacking, and the dangers for end users being open to exploitation by adversarial actors, an insecurity which amounts to multiple millions of financial losses year on year. John then went on to provide examples of real-world security exposures and configurations being hosted by large brand organisations – leaving end users open to hacking and compromise.
John concluded by demonstrating some examples how the end user may improve what he referred to as Safe-HEX. Here to assist our clubs’ members to better understand security, and insecurity, John has provided the club with a Security Guide.
A number of technical questions followed, which John readily fielded and Gordon gave a vote of thanks saying that John had clearly explained how important it was to be careful on your personal use of computers and smart phones. AR
