Trinity did not mean to go to sea

Club members acquaint themselves with the work of the RNLI by a visit to Hunstanton Lifeboat Station

In view of King's Lynn's importance as a Hanseatic port, safety at sea is paramount. With this in mind the Club visited Hunstanton Lifeboat Station to find out more.

The Station has two Lifeboats - an Atlantic Class 85 "Spirit of Norfolk" and a Hovercraft called the Hunstanton Flyer. With the contrariness of the tides and shifting sandbanks round this part of the coast the hovercraft is particularly useful in coping with stranded boats and unsuspecting holidaymakers caught by finding that the tide had crept in behind them unexpectedly.

All of the crew are volunteers, most living near the job, so that they can respond quickly to any emergency and the Station has anything between 40 and 70 "shouts" a year.

As the work of the RNLI relies totally on support from the public for its funding the Club were delighted to make a donation to an organisation where volunteers willingly risk their own lives to save those in peril on the sea
