Local resident Julyan Wallis, aka “The Guitar Doctor”, spoke to us about his life, love of guitars and the circumstances that led to his many appearances on the BBC “Repair Shop” programme. He also talked about what it was like to be on the programme and how many hours of footage were reduced down to just a few minutes of air time. President Del James and Julyan used to be teacher colleagues years ago!
Just a Minute!
At a recent meeting we decided to do something intellectual and emulate Radio 4. So, we put on an episode of the ever popular panel show “Just A Minute” and attempted unsuccessfully to speak for a minute without hesitation, deviation or repetition
Speaking for a minute without hesitation, deviation or repetition is much harder than it sounds. It has to be said that our panellists will not be knocking Paul Merton off his perch just yet!
Eclectic subjects set by question master “Call Me Nicholas Parsons” Russell, included Nosey Neighbours, How to Cook a Hippopotamus, and My Worst Ever Experience.
For the panellists, normally urbane and articulate, now reduced to gibbering idiocy, this probably was their worst ever experience… Suffice to say, we all enjoyed the evening, even those who had to listen to the programme in its entirety!
We have a programme of speakers and fun events coming up for the rest of the year, as well as serious discussions about how we can make a difference to communities here and in the rest of the world.
We always welcome new members, so to find out more about what we do, join us or apply for a grant, contact secretary@mountsbayrotary.org.uk, or speak to John on 07814 920004.
Membership
We were recently host to an inspirational speaker, Sam Cross from Plympton, who talked about membership, what it means to be a Rotarian and how to explain Rotary to non members.
Mounts Bay Rotary has many dedicated members, but every organisation needs new blood, new ideas and new ways of doing things in order to survive and thrive in the modern world.
We always welcome new members, so to find out more about what we do, join us or apply for a grant, contact secretary@mountsbayrotary.org.uk or speak to John on 07814 920004.

District Governor's Visit
The club was privileged to host District Governor Roger Field and his wife Hazel at a recent meeting.
He asked us to “imagine” – imagine a world without polio, imagine a world where everyone has access to clean drinking water, imagine a world where all women and children have access to education.
These are themes that the Club has been pursuing with our projects around the world, but perhaps we need to do things differently to be more effective. It was food for thought and we had a long informal discussion about these and other aspects of Rotary, including DG Roger’s particular motif of Rotarians Against Poverty.
If you would like to find out more about what we do, apply for a grant or join us, please message us here, write to secretary@mountsbayrotary.org or phone John on 07814 920004.
