Left RYLA mentor Derck RC of Stainborough, Isabel and on right President Jeremy Isabel gave the club a debrief on her week at Hebden Hey RYLA. Isabel gave detail of each day and the tasks they were given. These included first day ice breaking Kangaroo dance, orienteering a raft race mountain rescue a skit night Murder Hunt PT sessions and more. Isabel said in RYLA you dont fail a task you try try again and in a lot of the tasks get wet. She thanked the club for the "best year of her life"opportunity of her week at RYLA and thanked her Mentor Rotarian Derck Housley and Bill and Tony for their help. She talked of being inspired helping students at her school from abroad learn English LINK Hebden Hey Scout centre RYLA aims to promote leadership, community spirit and to challenge
young people, both mentally and physically and the club has agreed to send a candidates aged 16 or 17 on RYLA courses. The committee recruits candidates from the local area and submitt the appropriate details to secure a place on the course .

INNER 9 TECHNOLOGY TOURNAMENT 2017

| The annual Technology Tournament was held at Dewsbury Rams Rugby Ground facilities.
Local schools from Kirklees, Wakefield and Leeds areas competed at 3 levels Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. Nine Rotary Clubs from West Yorkshire helped to run the event with 12 schools and 27 teams competing in three different age groups they all took on the challenge of building a space capsule launcher. The project aim was at the Advanced level, to project a capsule holding a ball and parachute to a height of 2.5 metres, for the capsule to break away and return to ground, the ball and parachute to continue upwards until the parachute opens and the ball then drifts back to ground. Most teams made a good attempt at the project and were marked by the judges in 10 sections for 100 marks. The schools taking part were Upper Batley High School, Batley Girls High School, Whitcliffe Mount, St John Fisher, Thornhill Academy, Mirfield Free Grammar, Spen Valley, Woodkirk and Ossett Academy. The awards were presented by the Mayor of Kirklees to Mirfield Free Grammar who with high marks won all three classes. In attendance were Inner 9 ADG David Ramsbottom and 1040 DG Phil Poole. Chairman of the Organising Committee, Rotarian Mike Gill said," it is an absolute delight to see over a hundred young students applying themselves as small teams to a difficult challenge producing a portfolio tracing their thought processes as well as a working device". |
| A guide to the day:-Technology Tournaments held annually, are a day out for teams of four students with an interest in engineering, design, technology and science, to design and build a solution to an unseen technical task within a specific time frame. The teams need to have good communication skills, be well organised and able to show the stages of development of their task solution in a design portfolio. Each team's solution as a working model is competitively tested and assessed by a team of judges. Recognition is given to the winning teams in each of three age categories.

Kids Out 2017
I am pleased to report the club has jointly funded a memorable and
highly enjoyable event for disabled children from Fairfield School. The
New Generations committee organised and supported a ‘’Kids Out’’ day
at Lightwater Valley on Wednesday 14th June. Once again Heckmondwike
Rotary club jointly funded the event and two Heckmondwike Rotarians
(David & Orlando) also attended on the day.
Pupils attending are provided with transport to and from Lightwater
Valley, entrance to the park, a tee shirt and hat, lunch and also an ice
cream.
28 Children from the school, together with their carer’s were picked up
by coach from the school and transported to Lightwater Valley to enjoy
the facilities and rides available in the park. For the second successive
year a number of wheelchair users also attended and required the use of
school transport to attend. Lunch was distributed by the Rotarians
attending to support the event and all those involved had a thoroughly
memorable day which was enhanced (once again) by good weather.
Previously, due to school pick up times, the group had to leave Ripon at
around 3.00pm which shortens the day’s activities for pupils. However,
this year the School arranged later collection times for those attending
and the day was successfully extended by one hour to enable pupils to
take full advantage of the facilities of the park.
Upon leaving the park each child was given a goody bag to entertain
them on the return journey. Everyone was safely returned to school by
5.15pm.
The overall budget of the event was exceeded slightly following an
increase in the cost of coach hire and also the park entry fee and these
increases will be noted when organising the event next year.
Once again I wish to thank Helen for her work in organising this event,
Dictionaries 4 Life 2016
To promote literacy and support the education of young people, the New
Generations Committee is currently working to provide a small stock of
dictionaries to six local Junior and Infant schools. It is intended that
Schools will use the Dictionaries within the classroom. In future years
we will provide additional stock for use in schools as appropriate.
We have purchased the dictionaries and will be delivered to schools
within the next few weeks. On behalf of the committee can I thank the
club members who have once again volunteered to distribute the
Dictionaries to Schools?
