Rotary Youth Competitions

Rotary offers many competitions for young people either as part of a competition leading to a national final or organised at a local level.

Rotary Young Chef

The aim of Young chef competition aims to encourage young people to:

·       Learn how to cook a healthy meal

·       Develop food presentation skills

·       Consider food hygiene issues

·       Develop organisational and planning skills

·       Develop an ability to cope in a demanding situation

Students who participate in this competition give a great sense of achievement to their parents and their school, but above all to themselves when they find out what they are capable of. Quite often it is the experience of simply taking part, and the support they get in the process, which is the most valuable part.

It is not unusual for a student who is not necessarily an achiever in other fields to discover hidden talents, which can shape their career, or just be an enjoyable experience.

Rotary Youth Speaks

The Rotary Youth Speaks Competition is a well-established and successful public speaking competition organised and promoted by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland.

The aim of Youth Speaks is to offer young people:

·       experience in speaking on a public platform as a member of a team

·       an incentive to formulate ideas on topical subjects

·       discipline in dealing with a topic in a limited time

·       the opportunity of learning and practising high standards of expression, presentation and appearance,

·       impartial feedback and assessment of performance by experienced adjudicators

See separate entry for the Welsh Language competition which is a debating competition.

Rotary Young Musician

Music is the international language and Great Britain and Ireland is home to some of the most talented young instrumentalists and vocalists in the world.

Rotary celebrates this talent with a sequence of competitions that offer thousands of young people the chance to demonstrate their musical skills whether classical or modern.

The Rotary GB&I Young Musician competition provides a stage for musical talent to shine in regional competitions before the grand final itself.

Starting with club level competitions, winners progress to district events followed by regional contests with the hope of appearing at the national final, which was held in Cardiff in 2017.

Rotary Young Interviewer

The Young Interviewer competition has been running for some ten years.  It has had many prestigious Guests including Lord Kinnock, Anne Widdecombe, Sir Emyr Jones Parry and most recently, Lord Murphy of Torfaen.

Competitors are given an opportunity to interview well known personalities and to grill them on the topic which the Guest has chosen and their viewpoint on that topic.

Rotary Young Photographer

As a talent, and an art form, Rotary celebrates the photographic skills of thousands of young people with a sequence of competitions that give them the chance to demonstrate and display just what they can produce. Each year, we see more and more entries for this event.

This year the tasks was to produce a portfolio of three photographs based upon the theme, ‘Reflection’ in colour or black and white on photographic paper.

Rotary Young Writer

Creative writing is a talent to be celebrated and to be able to write is a special gift. Young people have, or have the ability to develop, this talent and Rotary wishes to promote writing through the Rotary GB&I Young Writer competition.

Starting with club level competitions, winners progress to district events and, ultimately, a national final with the winning work subsequently published in the Rotary magazine and website. The quality of work submitted in previous years has been outstanding

The task this year was to produce a written or typed story in prose entitled, ‘Reflection’. The written entry could be fiction or non-fiction, a story or a poem, as long as the piece relates to the theme. An A4 page or up to 500 hundred words is suggested.

Rotary Young Citizen Awards

Rotary celebrates the achievements of young people with the annual Rotary Young Citizen Awards. These showcase the citizenship and responsibilities demonstrated by people under the age of 25.

Winners receive their awards and a cash prize at our annual conference where the presentation is televised by the BBC.

Those nominated do not necessarily have to be working on a Rotary project to be eligible for an award. What matters is that they, individually or as part of a group, have made a positive difference, which has been recognised by a local Rotary club as worthy of a nomination.
