Club Spring Clean

The thoughtless or even deliberate depositing of litter remains a problem of our times. Litter is not only unsightly and a blot on our beautiful footpath and countryside but can also be dangerous to people and wildlife, especially broken glass.

Bala Rotary Spring Clean

A team of nine members and supporters of Bala and Penllyn Rotary Club turned out for the start of the Spring Clean season and gathered a substantial amount of discarded junk and litter from the footpaths and woods near the river Tryweryn, along the approach lane to the Canoe Club, and from the Tryweryn riverbank and adjoining land behind Cysgod y Coleg and Blaenddol. One morning's work resulted in two trailer-loads and a car-bootful  of discarded items being collected. Drinks cans, containers, plastic and glass bottles were sorted and taken to be recycled as were larger metal items such as a shopping trolley (without wheels!), bicycle frame, carpets, several large toys and a car wheel.

The thoughtless or even deliberate depositing of litter remains a problem of our times. Litter is not only unsightly and a blot on our beautiful footpath and countryside but can also be dangerous to people and wildlife, especially broken glass and jagged metal. Plastic bottles, food and confectionery wrappers do not biodegrade and remain an eyesore for many years.

The Rotary Club have organised Easter Spring Cleans in past years in response to a national initiative and are pleased to volunteer their services again this year in cooperation with the Snowdonia Society, Llanberis, who kindly provided bags, gloves and litter picking sticks.

A Club representative outlined plans for the coming Easter period,
"Further Spring Clean events are scheduled for Saturdays 23rd March and 20th April and the Rotary Club welcomes volunteers and any suggestions about litter problem areas around Bala that would not normally be covered by the Council and by the faithful work of Council worker Mike Yates.
