The History of John Lewis - Tim Cobley

12th August 2014

The Club enjoyed a most interesting talk from Tim Cobley, a Waitrose branch manager, on the history of the John Lewis Partnership which this year celebrates its 150th anniversary. He explained how the founder's son, Spedan, had initiated the business structure and that today there are some 91000 employees in 350 outlets worldwide. All are partners entitled, in addition to their salaries, to a share of the profits of the Group the first of whose Principles is the happiness of its members. Tim also related the many fringe benefits they enjoy; not least 26 weeks paid leave after 25 years service which he achieves this year! Happiness indeed! John Hunt
