Geoffrey chose to tell us about his first job, starting as a 16 year old, when he joined the Merchant Navy, initially with the Castle Line. At the time he was living in Southampton, so saw all the large liners in port, ready to sail to far off places.
He was taken on to help in the galley in the most menial of jobs, as a baker's sculleyman, but later progressed. During the two and a half years he was in the Navy he made several trips down the coast of Africa stopping off at different ports, before proceeding to the Far East and then on to Australia and New Zealand.
This experience had clearly equipped him well for life and the more senior roles he later achieved as a civil servant in local government.
