Michael recounted the early life of the founder Paul Harris, who was born on 19th April 1868. He did not have a very happy early life and did not like school. He went to live with his grandparents in a small town and after school he went to Vermont Military Academy, followed by Princeton University. He then went to Iowas to study law, graduating in 1891.
For 5 years he worked for George Clark, travelling round USA and setting up businesses for him. In 1896 he arrived in Chicago and set up his law firm. There he met other like-minded businessmen and set up an informal networking arrangement, which used to meet at each others businesses.
They formed a club in Chicago and expanded the membership, subsequently branching out into other cities. Henry Ruggles was one of the early pioneers, along with Don Carter and Chesney Perry.
The detailed history can be found in the Global History Fellowship on the R I website.
